Adolescent Scoliosis Therapy

Scoliosis is a 3-dimensional spinal deformity in which the spine deviates from its normal alignment. If your child has been diagnosed with scoliosis, you are probably concerned and have wondered what can be done to manage the condition. The approach for early intervention of scoliosis is often ‘Wait and See’, until the condition slowly worsens to the point where surgery is necessary. However, at Motion Physical Therapy in The Woodlands, Texas, we take a more proactive approach. Our physical therapy team offers premier conservative treatment of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, based on the Schroth Method.

Since the early 1920s, the Schroth Method has played an important role in conservative management of scoliosis in Germany. This method was developed by Katharina Schroth, who also suffered from scoliosis. The method of treatment she designed focuses on strengthening and stretching exercises to de-rotate and elongate the back into a more normal posture. The technique also utilizes special breathing exercises to produce forces that assist with the reshaping of the trunk.

Our physical therapy director, Larry Hixon, at Motion Physical Therapy is certified in 3-D Scoliosis Treatment based on the Schroth principles. Using these principles and techniques, he will design a scoliosis program tailored specifically to your child’s spinal curve pattern. The program will utilize exercise and specialized bracing, if necessary, to influence your child’s condition in a positive manner.

As we treat your child’s scoliosis condition at Motion Physical Therapy, our aim is to provide you and your child with information on how to effectively manage his or her condition, with the following goals:

  • Decrease postural imbalance,
  • Increase core strength and trunk flexibility,
  • Improve soft tissue mobility,
  • Improve cardiopulmonary function
  • Reduce pain

Improvement in the health of our patients is our passion.

Our physical therapy team is dedicated to reducing, or even stopping, the progression of the scoliosis condition. We believe your child should be able to participate in all of the enjoyable activities of adolescent life, and our program will focus on integrating corrected posture into daily living. Our goal is to empower you and your child with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively manage the condition, not just now, but for a lifetime.
